Every parent knows the feeling. It is a rainy afternoon, the toys are scattered everywhere, and your toddler is followng you around saying, “I’m bored!” You don’t need a fancy playroom or expensive gadgets to fix this.

You can turn a “bored day” into a “fun day” using items you already have in your kitchen or closet. Here are 15 simple activities that take less than 5 minutes to set up.

1. The “Wash the Toys” Station

Fill a plastic bin with warm soapy water and give your toddler a scrub brush or a sponge. Throw in some plastic dinosaurs or cars. Toddlers love bubbles, and it keeps their toys clean too!

2. Masking Tape Roads

Use masking tape or painter’s tape to create “roads” on your living room floor. Your toddler can drive their toy cars along the lines. It’s a great way to practice motor skills.

3. Kitchen Band Practice

Grab some wooden spoons and plastic bowls. Let your child explore different sounds. It might be a little noisy, but it is a fantastic way for them to learn about rhythm.

4. Cardboard Box Tunnel

Don’t throw away those delivery boxes! Open both ends of a large box to make a tunnel. Toddlers love crawling through “secret passages.”

5. Sock Matching Game

Dump a pile of clean, unmatched socks on the floor. Ask your toddler to find the pairs. It is a simple puzzle that teaches them about colors and patterns.

6. Indoor Picnic

Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need. Spread a blanket on the floor and eat lunch or a snack there instead of at the table.

7. DIY Shape Sorter

Cut different shapes (circles, squares, triangles) into the lid of a shoebox. Have your toddler drop the matching items inside.

8. Pompom Push

Give your child an empty plastic bottle and some colorful pompoms. They will spend ages pushing the soft balls through the narrow opening of the bottle.

9. Sticky Wall

Tape a piece of contact paper (sticky side out) to the wall. Give your toddler scraps of paper or ribbons to stick onto it. It’s art without the gluey mess!

10. Pillow Mountain

Stack all your sofa cushions and pillows in the middle of the rug. Let your toddler climb over them. It is a safe way to burn off extra energy.

11. Muffin Tin Sorting

Give your child a muffin tin and small objects like big buttons or colored cereal. Ask them to sort the items by color into each cup.

12. “I Spy” with a Flashlight

Turn off the lights and use a flashlight to find things around the room. Say, “I spy something red,” and let them shine the light on it.

13. Balloon Tennis

Blow up a balloon and use your hands (or paper plates) as rackets. The balloon moves slowly, so it is easy for toddlers to hit.

14. Water Painting

Give your child a cup of water and a paintbrush. Let them “paint” on a piece of dark construction paper. As the water dries, the “art” disappears!

15. The Ice Cube Race

Put a few ice cubes on a tray. Give your toddler a spoon and see if they can move the slippery cubes from one side of the tray to the other.
